And as long as I’m on a Steranko kick, here’s a Christmas card that Jim sent out in the ’60s while he was working on NICK FURY, AGENT OF S.H.I.E.L.D.
Steranko’s Nick Fury has become my most favorite Marvel character ever. Ever.

Harlequin, Arles, 1955 - by Lucien Clergue
I came across this photo a few weeks ago, and I just love it. The kid seems to be saying “look, old man, I put on your crazy costume, but I’m not posing. Now snap, the picture, give me my ten francs and fuck off!”

WNRN, in Charlottesville, had these cartridges—what radio stations used for songs on their playlists in the 1980s—on the wall in the studio. Ghosts!
This is musically sad, because the quality of those carts was universally horrendous. But as a historical record, it’s simultaneously awesome. Kudos to WNRN for hanging on to these!

Superman’s Girlfriend Lois Lane #105, October 1970, cover by Curt Swan and Murphy Anderson
We have a good number of the Superman’s Girlfriend Lois Lane series at the UMBC library, and I have to say, they have some of the most hilarious and ridiculous covers I’ve ever seen (and Comic Vine has a complete gallery, of course). They easily rival the early World’s Finest comics for sheer ridiculousness.
| Paris Review: | Your work seems to involve a feminist reading of history and literature. |
| Kate Beaton: | I think that’s because I make comics that aren’t all about white presidents. |
